My sister introduced me to this easy apple dumpling recipe many years ago. It only takes a few minutes to prepare and yet bakes into an amazing, buttery, delicious dessert. Her recipe is packed with delicious tart apples wrapped in store-bought crescent rolls. The rolls are topped with lemon-lime soda and a quick and easy homemade sauce that bakes into a buttery caramel sauce perfect for spooning on top of the dumplings.

Easy Apple Dumplings Recipe

Ingredients

For this recipe, you’ll need the following simple ingredients.

  • Apples: I love to use granny smith apples. You can substitute with your favorite baking apples such as Braeburn, Rome, and Fuji.
  • Crescent Rolls: You’ll use store-bought crescent roll dough to wrap the apple slices.
  • Butter: Used to make the caramel sauce and to butter the baking dish.
  • Brown Sugar: Used to make the homemade sauce the dumplings are baked in and then spooned over the dumplings.
  • Sugar: Used to make the sauce for the dumplings.
  • Lemon-Lime Soda: Used to soak the apples before wrapping in the Crescent Rolls Dough to prevent browning and for baking the dumplings.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Prep. Preheat oven to 375º F. Butter 9×13 baking dish and set aside. Place the baking dish on a baking sheet and set aside. Pour lemon-lime soda into a medium bowl.

Prepare the dumplings. Peel and slice each apple into six equal slices. Add apple slices to the lemon-lime soda bowl to prevent the apples’ browning. Wrap each apple slice in a wedge of crescent roll dough. Place into the prepared baking dish. Repeat until all apple slices have been prepared. Pour the lemon-lime soda over the dumplings.

  1. Ha! I thought of the movie too! I should rent that for my kids. Then we’ll have this dessert while watching it! It looks great, thanks!

  2. Hi – saw this resurrected on fb – what can I use instead of crescent rolls as I am kosher and the classic ready made crescent rolls are not.

Is this dough a flaky type of dough like croissant type or pie like dough. Any advice would be appreciated.

    1. Hi Ruthy,
Yes, this is a flaky dough like a croissant. While I’ve not tried it, I bet you could make a buttery, biscuit type dough that would work. Now, I’m thinking I should go to the kitchen and try it myself!!! 🙂
